The Holy Mass




 
 
  For almost 2000 years, The Mass grew from a core of rituals that didn't change and that, for whatever else was varied from place to place, evoked reverence because it was offered as and understood to be the ceremony of the Unbloody Sacrifice. A new version, promulgated officially in 1969, seems to lack the reverence, and for some seems to suggest no Sacrifice.
  Such 'abuses' as some would see this, with a limited view, seem almost encouraged by what can be called the 'new order', or Novus Ordo. But while other abuses were always possible, the scope and type found today would be foreign to The Mass, and so some are even led to say that the beginning of the end is near for this 'new order', and that The Latin Mass, the Mass of millenia, the Mass of the generations, is that for the future.
  Therefore, here is an effort to provide the text of The Mass, in Latin, and with English translation – as was the practice in the old missals Catholics could buy. It comes from the 1958 Marian version (of Fr. Juergens), also from the 1945 missal (of Fr. Lasance), which will differ slightly from the 1962 version typically found in the later St. Joseph's Missal, and as in the little red Latin-English Mass booklet published in 1995 by the Coalition in Support of Ecclesia Dei; which Holy Mass is presently offered, many hope only temporarily as just a limited 'indult'; i.e. rather that The Mass, without such qualification; offered only in a few places by bishops and priests particularly dedicated to their Church – and mine.
  The Eucharist lies at the very core, and as the very purpose, of The Mass; which itself lies at the very heart of The Church.
  There is also another site, only in Latin, without the English, also beautifully done, I think.

The late Pope Pius X has put it in these words: Don't pray at Holy Mass, but pray the Holy Mass.

Explaining himself further, his Holiness set forth: The Holy Mass is a prayer itself, even the highest prayer that exists.

 
 
 
Try to be present in church some moments before the beginning of the Holy Mass, to prepare yourself for the sublime Sacrifice of the altar, and pray:

Prayer before beginning of Mass

Eternal Father, I unite myself with the intentions and affections of our Lady of Sorrows on Calvary, and I offer Thee the Sacrifice which Thy beloved Son, Jesus, made of Himself on The Cross and which He now renews on this holy altar:

  1. To adore Thee and give Thee the honor which is due to Thee, confessing Thy supreme dominion over all things, and the absolute dependence of everything upon Thee, Who art our one and last End.
  2. To thank Thee for innumerable benefits received.
  3. To appease Thy justice, aroused against us by so many sins, and to make satisfaction for them.
  4. To implore grace and mercy for myself, for ____, for Thy Holy Church, for all afflicted and sorrowing, for poor sinners, for all the world, and for the holy souls in Purgatory.
 
 

The Asperges
(this prayer sung by the choir before the high (main Sunday) Mass)

Before the high Mass, and with a server on his left bearing the holy water, the priest, wearing a cope, comes to the foot of the altar, intoning the anthem, below, and sprinkles holy water on the altar 3 times, then on himself, then on the servers, and finally on the faithful.

 
Asperges me, Domine, hyssopo, et mundabor: lavabis me, et super nivem dealbabor.

Kissing the altar at the place where the saint's relics are enclosed, at the middle of the altar, he says:

Oramus te. Domine, per merita Sanctorum tuorum, quorum reliquiae hic sunt et omnium Sanctorum: ut indulgere digneris omnia peccata mea. Amen

  We beseech Thee, O Lord, by the merits of Thy Saints whose relics lie here, and of all the Saints: that Thou would vouchsafe to pardon me all my sins. Amen.
 
(At high Mass)
The priest blesses the incense:

Ab illo benedicaris, in cujus honore cremaberis. Amen.

  Be blessed by Him in Whose honour thou art burnt. Amen.

He then incenses the altar, swinging the thurible or censer, containing the incense, away from himself. Then he gives it to the server/deacon who blesses him with the incense.

  Vouchsafe, O Lord, to bless me.

At high Mass, where the deacon sings the Gospel, this is said rather than that just above:

  I believe in one God, The Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the Only-begotten Son of God. Born of the Father before all ages. God of God, Light of Light, true God of true God. Begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father, by Whom all things were made. Who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven.

The Offertory  

The faithful sit down as the priest uncovers the chalice, then reads the offertory verse, after which the bell, (bell), is rung once. He then takes the paten, in which the host is laid, and offers the host, saying:

Suscipe, sancte Pater, omnipotens aeterne Deus, hanc immaculatam hostiam, quam ego indignus famulus tuus offero tibi, Deo meo vivo et vero, pro innumerabilibus peccatis, et offensionibus, et negligentiis meis, et pro omnibus circumstantibus, sed et pro omnibus fidelibus christianis vivis atque defunctis: ut mihi, et illis proficiat ad salutem in vitam aeternam. Amen.

  Accept, O Holy Father, almighty and eternal God, this spotless host, which I, Thy unworthy servant, offer unto Thee, my living and true God, to atone for my innumerable sins, offenses, and negligences, and for all here present; also for all faithful christians both living and dead, that it may profit me and them for salvation unto life everlasting. Amen.
 

The priest makes the Sign of The Cross, here, with the paten, and then places the host on the corporal (square linen cloth). At the right side of the altar, he blesses the water, then mixes together the water and wine.

Deus, † qui humanae substantiae dignitatem mirabiliter condidisti, et mirabilius reformasti: da nobis per hujus aquae et vini mysterium, ejusdivinitatis esse consortes, qui humanitatis nostrae fieri dignatus est particeps, Jesus Christus Filius tuus Dominus noster: Qui tecum vivit et regnat in unitate Spiritus Sancti Deus: per omnia saecula saeculorum.   O God, † Who, in creating human nature, did wonderfully dignify it, and still more wonderfully restored it, grant that by the Mystery of this water and wine, we may be made partakers of His divine nature, Who vouchsafed to be made partaker of our human nature, even Jesus Christ, our Lord, Thy Son: Who with Thee, lives and reigns in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God: world without end. Amen.
 

The priest offers the chalice.

(P): Offerimus tibi, Domine, calicem salutaris tuam deprecantes clementiam: ut in conspectu divinae majestatis tuae, pro nostra et totius mundi salute com odore suavitatis ascendat. Amen.

  P: We offer Thee, O Lord, the chalice of salvation, beseeching Thy clemency, that it may ascend before Thy divine Majesty, as a sweet fragrance, for our salvation, and for that of the whole world. Amen.
 
The priest makes the Sign of The Cross with the chalice, places the chalice on the corporal, covers it with the pall (small square linen covered board), bows, and says:

In spiritu humilitatis, et in animo contrito suscipiamur a te, Domine, et sic fiat sacrificum nostrum in conspectu tuo hodie, ut placeat tibi, Domine Deus.

  Accept us, O Lord, in our spirit of humility and contrition of heart, and grant that the sacrifice which we offer this day in Thy sight may be pleasing to Thee, O Lord God.
 

The priest lifts his eyes to Heaven, joins his hands and so makes the Sign of The Cross over both the host and wine, invoking The Holy Spirit by saying:

Veni, Sanctificator omnipotens aeterne Deus: et benedic † hoc sacrificum tuo sancto nomini praeparatum.

  Come, O Sanctifier, Almighty and Eternal God, and bless † this sacrifice prepared for the glory of Thy holy Name.

 

Incensing the Offerings  

(at solemn, high Mass)
The priest blesses the incense:

Per intercessionem beati Michaelis Archangeli, stantis a dextris altaris incensi, et omnium electorum suorum, incensum istud dignetur Dominus benedicere, † et in odorem suavitatis accipere. Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.

  Through the intercession of Blessed Michael the Archangel, standing at the right hand of the altar of incense, and of all His elect may the Lord vouchsafe to bless † this incense and to receive it in the odor of sweetness. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
The priest incenses the bread and wine:

Incensum istud a te benedictum, ascendat ad re, Domine, et descendat super nos misericordia tua.

  May this incense blessed by You, arise before You, O Lord, and may Your mercy come down upon us.
The priest incenses the Crucifix, and the altar, saying:

Dirigatur, Domine, oratio mea sicut incensum in conspectu tuo: elevatio manuum mearum sacrificium vespertinum. Pone, Domine, custodiam ori meo, et ostium circumstantiae labiis meis: ut non declinet cor meum in verba malitiae, ad excsandas excusationes in peccatis. Accendat in nobis Dominus ignem sui amoris, et flammam aeterne caritatis. Amen.

  Let my prayer, O Lord, come like incense before You; the lifting up of my hands, like the evening sacrifice. O Lord, set a watch before my mouth, a guard at the door of my lips. Let not my heart incline to the evil of engaging in deeds of wickedness. May the Lord enkindle in us the fire of His love and the flame of everlasting charity. Amen.

 

Washing of the Hands

Mixing the Body and Blood  

The priest makes the Sign of The Cross with the particle he just broke off, over the chalice:

He places the particle in the chalice, and says, inaudibly:

The priest reverently receives both halves of The Host.

 

Communion of The Precious Blood
The priest uncovers the chalice, genuflects, collects any remaining Fragments from the Host off the corporal, and purifies the paten over the chalice, saying:

Quid retribuam Domino pro omnibus quae retribuit mihi? Calicem salutaris accipiam, et nomen Domini invoacbo. Laudans invocabo Dominum, et ab inimicis meis salvus ero.

  What return shall I render unto the Lord for all He has given me? I will take the chalice of salvation, and I will call upon the Name of the Lord. Praising I will call upon the Lord, and I shall be saved from all my enemies.
 
The priest takes the chalice in his right hand, and making the Sign of the Cross says:

Sanguis Domini nostri Jesu Christi custiodiat animam meam in vitam aeternam. Amen.

  The Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ preserve my soul to life everlasting. Amen.
 
The priest receives all the Precious Blood, and the Particle.

 

Communion of the Faithful  

(this Confiteor is generally used in older Masses, but not the later 1962)
Altar server recites Confiteor, if Holy Communion is distributed.

(S): Confiteor Deo omnipotenti, beatae Mariae semper Virgini, beato Michaeli Archangelo, beato Joanni Baptistae, sanctis Apostolis Petro et Paulo, omnibus Sanctis, et tibi Pater: quia peccavi nimis cogitatione verbo, et opere:

  S: I confess to Almighty God, to Blessed Mary ever Virgin, to Blessed Michael the Archangel, to Blessed John the Baptist, to the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and all the Saints, and to you, Father, that I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word, deed:
Strike their breast three times.

Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa.

  Through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault,

The priest genuflects, holds up one of the smaller Hosts over the ciborium (which holds the other consecrated Hosts), turns around to the faithful and says:

Ecce Agnus Dei, ecce qui tollit peccata mundi.

  Behold the Lamb of God, behold Him who takes away the sins of the world.
 
The priest says three times: (three bells)

Domine, non sum dignus, et intres sub tectum meum: sed tantum dic verbo, et sanabitur anima mea.

Holy Communion  

(The communicant does not reply, 'Amen'.)
The faithful come to the altar rail, and the priest gives them Holy Communion, saying:

  The Body of our Lord Jesus Christ preserve thy soul unto everlasting life. Amen.
 
When everyone has received, the priest places the ciborium in the Tabernacle.

 

Prayers during the Ablutions  

Wine is poured into the chalice, which the priest drinks, and says:

Quod ore sumpisimus, Domine, pura mente capiamus, et de munere temporali fiat nobis remedium sempiternum.

  Grant, O Lord, that what we have taken with our mouth, we may receive with a pure mind; and from a temporal gift may it become to us an eternal remedy.
 
The server pours water and wine over the fingers of the priest, into the chalice, who dries his fingers with the purificator cloth, and says, silently:

Corpus tuum, Domine, quod sumpsi, et Sanguis, quem potavi, adhaereat visceribus meis: et praest; ut in me non ramaneat scelerum macula, quem pura et sancta refecerunt Sacramenta. Qui vivis et regnas in saecula saeculorum, Amen.

  May Thy Body, O Lord, which I have received, and Thy Blood which I have drunk, cling to my inmost being; and grant that no stain of sin may remain in me, who has been fed with this pure and holy Sacrament; Who live reign, world without end. Amen.
 
The priest drinks the water and wine mixture, then wipes the inside of the chalice (purifies it) with the same cloth, and covers it with the veil.
 

Communion Verse  

From the right, Epistle, side of the altar, the priest reads the appropriate Communion verse from the altar missal, then goes to the middle of the altar and says:

(P): Dominus vobiscum.

  P: The Lord be with you.

(S): Et cum spiritu tuo.

  S: And with you spirit.

(P): Oremus.

  P: Let us pray.
 

Post-Communion 

Again, from the Epistle side, the priest reads the appropriate post-Communion verse.

(S): Amen.

  S: Amen.

 

CONCLUSION OF THE MASS
 
The Dismissal  
The priest goes to the middle of the altar, kisses the altar, turns around to the faithful and says aloud:

(P): Dominus vobiscum.

  P: The Lord be with you.

(S): Et cum spiritu tuo.

  S: And with thy spirit.

(P): Ite, Missa est.

  P: Go, the Mass is ended.

(S): Deo gratias.

  S: Thanks be to God.

 

The Final Blessing  

The priest says, silently, bowing before the altar:

Placeat tibi, sancta Trinitas, obsequium servitutis meae: et praesta, ut sacrificium quod oculis tuae majestatis indignus obtuli, tibi sit acceptabile, mihique, et omnibus proquibus illud obtuli, sit te miserante propitiabile. Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.

  May the performance of my homage be pleasing to Thee, most Holy Trinity: and grant that the Sacrifice which I, though unworthy, have offered up in the sight of Thy Majesty, may be acceptable to Thee, and through Thy mercy, be a propitiation for me and for all whom I have offered it. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
 
The priest kisses the altar, turns and makes the Sign of The Cross:

A great doctor of the Church, St. Anselm, declares that a single Mass offered for oneself during life may be worth more than a thousand celebrated for the same intention after death. St. Leonard of Port Maurice supports this statement by saying that one Mass before death may be more profitable than many after it.

"The Holy Mass would be of greater profit if people had it offered in their lifetime, rather than having it celebrated for the relief of their souls after death." (Pope Benedict XV)

Once, St. Teresa was overwhelmed with God's Goodness and asked Our Lord, "How can I thank you?" Our Lord replied, "ATTEND ONE MASS."

The Blessed Virgin Mary once told Her faithful servant Alain: "My Son so loves those who assist at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass that, if it were necessary He would die for them as many times as they've heard Masses."

Tips on Prayer

Your prayers are strongest at the Consecration in Holy Mass (raising of the Host and Chalice).

Prayer to Obtain the Grace of all World's Masses

Eternal Father we humbly offer Thee our poor presence and that of the whole of humanity from the beginning to the end of the world at all the Masses that ever have or ever will be prayed. We offer Thee all the pains, suffering, prayers, sacrifices, joys and relaxations of our lives, in union with those of your dear Lord Jesus here on earth. May the Most Precious Blood of Christ, all His blood and wounds and agony save us, through the sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary. Amen! (This prayer should be prayed daily, and made known.)

1. The Mass is Calvary continued

2. Every Mass is worth as much as the sacrifice of our Lord's life, sufferings and death.

HOLY COMMUNION

Each time we receive Holy Communion our venial sins are forgiven.

Christ revealed to St. Gertrude the Great that each time 1 person receives Holy Communion something good happens to every being in heaven on earth and in purgatory.

The Curate of Ars said that a Communion well received is worth more than 20,000 NFF given to the poor.

Each time we receive Communion our place in heaven is raised forever, our stay in purgatory shortened.

WE SHOULD NEVER LET A DAY PASS WITHOUT GOING TO HOLY COMMUNION!

Spiritual Communion

The value of a spiritual Communion well made is enormous. We can and should make one frequently. Simply think of Jesus and how much He loves us and how much we love Him, then ask Our Blessed Mother to ask Her Divine Son to come into our hearts. We can offer these Communions for the interest of the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, noting our special intention!
